Why Move to Europe/Lithuania?

Why Move to Europe/Lithuania?

Moving to a new country is a major decision that requires careful consideration. If you’re thinking about relocating to Europe, Lithuania stands out as a great choice for many reasons. Whether you’re looking for better job opportunities, affordable living costs, or a gateway to the European Union, Lithuania offers plenty of advantages. Here’s why you should consider moving to Lithuania.

1. Affordable Cost of Living

Compared to other European countries, Lithuania has a relatively low cost of living. Housing, food, and transportation are much cheaper than in Western European nations like Germany or France, making it easier to settle down without breaking the bank.

When I first moved, I was amazed at how affordable rent and food were compared to Ghana. Like many Africans, I instinctively converted euros to cedis, and at first glance, everything seemed expensive. However, I soon realized that the things I couldn’t afford back home were easily within reach here. I remember going to the store and buying loads of apples and grapes simply because they were so cheap! Meat and eggs were also far more affordable.

I paid just 100 euros to share a room with another student in a student dormitory, which was clean, well-maintained, and regularly serviced by cleaners. The living conditions were excellent, especially considering the cost.

2. Easier Visa and Residency Process

Lithuania offers several visa options for students, workers, and entrepreneurs. The immigration process is more straightforward than in many other European countries, making it an attractive destination for those looking to relocate.

I remember my visa appointment day vividly—I was so anxious that I thought I had forgotten some documents. It turned out I was overly prepared! The process was much smoother than I expected. Since Lithuania does not have an embassy in Ghana, I had to apply through the Netherlands Embassy in Accra, which represents Lithuania in visa applications. I was granted a Schengen tourist visa, which eventually led me here.

3. Job Opportunities in Key Sectors

Lithuania’s growing economy has created job opportunities in industries such as IT, finance, logistics, and manufacturing. Foreigners with skills in these areas have a good chance of securing employment.

Since 2024, there has been a significant influx of Ghanaian bus drivers recruited to work in Lithuania. Similarly, I’ve met many people who moved from Africa specifically for programming jobs. Just like the bus drivers, their companies sponsored their relocation.

Finding a job took some effort, but once I landed my first role, I realized how highly foreign professionals are valued in certain industries. Networking definitely helped!

4. A Gateway to the European Union

As a member of the European Union and Schengen Area, Lithuania provides easy access to other European countries. Once you obtain a residence permit, you can travel freely within the Schengen Zone. Even with just a Schengen visa, you can visit any Schengen member state.

One of the best perks? Cheap flights! I once took a spontaneous trip to Sweden for just €23. Students have it even better—with an ISIC card, they get discounts on some flights.

5. Business and Investment Opportunities

Lithuania is known for its business-friendly environment. With low corporate taxes and government support for startups, entrepreneurs and business owners can establish themselves easily. Many foreigners have successfully opened restaurants, stores, and tech businesses in Lithuania.

When I started my business, I was surprised by the support available. The paperwork was manageable, and there were even grants for small businesses. It’s definitely a great place to start something new!

6. Quality Education System

For students, Lithuania offers affordable and high-quality education. Many universities have English-taught programs, making it easier for international students to study and later transition into the workforce.

I was amazed by how practical the education system is here. In just one year of study, I learned almost everything I applied in my job.

Many students who came here for their degrees ended up staying because they loved the lifestyle. I am one of them! I initially came for an Erasmus exchange program, fell in love with the education system, the country, the people, and their culture—and now, I live here. Affordable tuition is a major attraction!

7. Safety and High Quality of Life

Lithuania is considered one of the safest countries in Europe. With a peaceful environment, good healthcare, and well-developed infrastructure, it offers a high standard of living for residents.

Walking alone at night feels surprisingly safe compared to other places I’ve lived. In Vilnius, it’s normal for a woman to walk home at 4 AM without fear. That’s how safe Lithuania is. It’s reassuring to live in a country where security isn’t a major concern.

8. Rich Culture and International Community

Lithuania has a unique culture, rich history, and a welcoming environment for foreigners. The growing international community means that expatriates can find support networks and connect with people from different backgrounds.

Lithuanians may seem reserved at first, but once you get to know them, they treat you like family. The warmth is real—it’s just a little hidden at first! One of the reasons I decided to stay in Lithuania was the kindness I received from my host school and my first job. I was treated exceptionally well.

9. Good Transport and Connectivity

Lithuania has a well-connected transport system, making it easy to move around the country and travel to other European destinations. Vilnius International Airport offers affordable flights to major European cities.

Public transport is efficient, but learning Lithuanian bus stop names took me a while! More than once, I stood at the wrong bus stop and ended up in the wrong place. Now, I navigate like a local. All it takes is time and a willingness to learn and adapt.

Another surprising thing for me was how punctual public transportation is. Coming from Ghana, where we rely on “trotro” (shared minibuses with no fixed schedules), I was amazed to see buses arriving exactly on time.

Conclusion

Lithuania is an excellent choice for anyone considering relocation to Europe. Whether you’re moving for work, education, or business, the country offers numerous opportunities and a great quality of life.

If you’re thinking about moving here, my advice is to take the leap. It might seem daunting at first, but Lithuania has a way of making you feel at home. Stay tuned for more guides on making your move smooth and successful!
